The General Election 2015 is over and we are left to pick up the pieces.
For some of us that election was a personal crusade, involving first time attempts at election both Generally and Locally.
As a GREEN PARTY member (I hate the word ‘Party’ – it sounds so 1984 to me) I was nominated to stand for election for a seat on my local council and managed to get 7% of the vote, the best result we have seen in this area, which is historically Conservative/Liberal. In the end we got a local Conservative to take the council seat and also a new Conservative MP, pushing the long serving Lib Dem representative out of office.
So we are now starting to get back to normal. Or as normal as life can ever be when most of the country are running around beating their chests in rage and indignation at the Tory win. Hey, this is democracy folks…love it or hate it it’s all we have got.
A change to the voting system from FPTP to PR would see massively different results, and also create a parliament which is not so ‘Party-Centric’ and more varied , representing the true values of the constituencies they represent. Ironically we need the party in power to be willing to hold yet another referendum regarding our voting system and that is unlikely to happen any time soon. (apparently it happened a few years ago, but I don’t remember it)
In my own life, I am getting back to normal and planning my next project – writing a book and actually finishing it. Whilst offering my services as The Communication Coach to other folks who struggle with words and where to put them.
(You may be wondering what the connection is between my work and the election but stick with me, it will all make sense shortly)
The one thing that stands out so clearly in our fast paced modern world is the necessity of crystal clear communication when you are attempting to gain support from the masses
Which, if you think about it, is exactly what you do when you promote or market your business. You talk to the masses and hope to attract their attention, garner their support and, at some point, consolidate that support in sales and income for your business. Whether you are creating captivating cupcakes or offering awesome yoga yumminess, you are always looking to get your message to the wider world, hoping always that the right person will hear it and take it to the next level.
When put like that, its pretty much like dating, isn’t it? First you need to be clear on who you are and what matters to you. You only have to try and fill out a Match.com questionnaire to realise how important that part really is. Then you need to get clear on what you will and won’t accept from other people, the deal breakers in many relationships. Only by clearly communicating these needs, wants and desires, will you ever find a compatible partner – no matter what route you go down, all relationships essentially come down to good communications and a willingness to truly engage.
This is the basis of all my work, whether I am coaching couples toward a more fulfilling relationship. sharing pearls of parenting wisdom with stressed out mums or public speaking in the corporate world, my message is clear, concise and irrefutable: Get Clear in Your Communications and you will be smiling all the way to the bank!
This is one thing I feel that all the political parties forgot in the rush for No 10, and we must all learn from their mistakes: Stop fudging, stop waffling, stop taking pot shots at the opposition – simply tell us who you are and show us what you do, let us know what you can do for us and make it so much easier to choose to do business with you!
After all, if you are in business, this is all you really want. And we really want to is to get our needs met, and to feel good while we do it. It’s a no-brainer really isn’t it?
But if you feel you just don’t have the time, or the words to get your message out – it’s good to know you are not alone –www.thecommunicationcoach.co.uk is here to help. You only have to ask!
